The synthesiser is opened from the back and almost all components have to be removed to access the display, unfortunately the keyboard also has to be removed.The display assembly in Roland JP-8000:We have developed a special cable adapter for the display in the Roland JP8000. This makes it possible to continue using the flat cable used in the original. The flat cable is simply plugged in.The display in the Roland JP8000 is mounted on plastic bolts that are firmly connected to the display frame of the synthesiser, but these plastic bolts are much too high for the new OLED display at 8 mm. It is best to shorten these bolts to 5 mm so that the new OLED display comes very close to the windscreen. These plastic bolts can be easily sawn off with a small modelling handsaw. In our picture it is a saw from Tamiya.The big advantage is that a shim can be placed underneath as a height stop. No soldering required.Mechanical hints for the replacement of the OLED display in the Yamaha DX5:The mechanical effort required to remove the display from the instrument is relatively simple in this case. The cover of the synthesizer can be lifted up after loosening a few screws. Now the circuit board on which the display is mounted must be unscrewed. The display itself is screwed on and the cable is plugged in.Snipping off the metal tab:The OLED display is inserted into metal brackets in the Yamaha DX5. A small metal tab needs to be snipped off here. This can be done using a pair of side cutters.Recommendation:Disconnect the circuitry that generated the backlight voltage for the old display. Simply cut off two components using small side cutters.Instructions are included with the display.Note on OLED technology:OLED - organic light-emitting diode. The advantage of OLED technology is that each pixel is illuminated. This makes the OLED display easy to read from all sides, even from extreme viewing angles. The OLED display is ready to install, no soldering required. Hints for mounting:In order to install this new OLED display in the Yamaha TG33, the mechanical assembly has to be carried out slightly differently to how it was solved with the original display. The original LCD display in the TG33 was screwed from the back onto retaining lugs provided in the housing. The new OLED can also be mounted in this way, but it is then quite far back and visually there is a tunnel effect from the outside. It makes more sense to screw the display onto the other side of the retaining lugs, because then the OLED display lies directly against the windscreen. For this installation, however, the entire housing of the Yamaha TG33 must be dismantled.
