Yamaha SY77 Synthesizer
The YAMAHA SY77 is the predecessor of the YAMAHA SY99, which was released two years later in 1989. Both, the SY77, and the SY99 are quasi direct successors of the YAMAHA DX7, probably the most famous synthesizer of the 80s.
The SY77 was designed by Yamaha with the intention of combining classic FM synthesis with the ability to use sampled sounds.
It was intended to provide improved access to sound generation by users who had previously found it somewhat difficult to use the purely FM synthesis based DX7. To some extent at least, this plan was also successful, if some elements of FM synthesis were replaced by AWM elements.
With, or without keys?
Like many other devices, Yamaha also offered the SY77 in a pure rack version as TG77 starting in 1990. The rack version has, among other things, an additional 8 individual outputs and a larger, more readable display, but does without the sequencer present in the SY77.
The device was delivered, differently than rack versions of other manufacturers in generous 3 height units, but unfortunately the menu guidance had not substantially improved for it.
The sound of the SY77 and also of the TG77 can probably be called fat, at least recognizably from the sounds of other devices of the competitors.
Need a repair?
The most common defect of the SY and TG series today is probably the display.
After 30 years of life, the readability of the displays has deteriorated considerably. Another very common error in relation to the displays is the strong, very high whistling sound that comes from the power supply of the display backlight.
We offer replacement displays in our online store that are 100% compatible with the originally installed ones.
These can be purchased for relatively easy do-it-yourself installation. For those customers who do not dare to do the installation themselves, or those who do not want to make the effort to do the conversion themselves, we offer of course the conversion in our workshop.
Here we also have all the necessary measuring instruments and tools to repair other faults, such as loose contacts on the jack sockets, scratching of the rotary and sliding potentiometers, as well as bouncing of the buttons, at the same time as changing the display.
