Rotary or sliding encoder

Encoders are analogue or digital electronic components that are used, for example, to change data values.
They are designed as rotary encoders, but often also as sliders. Together with the decoders, they form a logical unit or a functional chain.
In synthesizers, midi devices, samplers, electric pianos, and other electronic musical instruments, they are important input devices for changing data, entering texts, editing filter values, etc. their proper functioning depends quite a bit on their being in perfect working order.
The usefulness of a synth or sampler often depends on its proper functioning. If the encoder is defective or does produce unclear values, the device in which it is installed can usually no longer be used without errors.

Encoder malfunctions

Over time, encoders can be subject to wear and tear that leads to ambiguous or incorrect readings. This then manifests itself in the encoder being moved by the user to a certain position from which a certain result would be expected. Instead of displaying this correct, unambiguous value, the display of the device jumps back and forth between two values, for example. It may also be that certain values can no longer be approached. External mechanical influences could also have damaged the encoder. For example, between 0 and 30 everything is displayed correctly, but the range between 31 and 67 cannot be selected, although from 68 to 128 everything seems to work correctly again. Such errors indicate a defective encoder. Replacing the defective rotary or slide encoder very often restores a perfectly operable unit.

Encoder repair

Often, the defective encoder can be replaced relatively easily, whereas sometimes it is necessary to disassemble the entire unit in order to access the corresponding solder points so that the replacement can be carried out. Depending on the instrument, this can be quite time-consuming and, if you do not have the right tools and/or the manual skills, should rather be carried out by a specialist workshop in order to avoid lasting damage to your high-quality musical instrument. In this way, you will avoid subsequent costs due to improper handling, and you will also have your instrument repaired with the guarantee of a specialist workshop.
