Soldering may be required if the EPROM in the Yamaha DX7 II is not socketed. In very many cases EPORMs are plugged in on a socket from the factory. But it can happen that the EPROM is soldered directly. In this case the EPROM would have to be desoldered. In this case it is advisable to retrofit the IC socket.
