Technics replacement of defective key guides

Hanging or dragging keys in Technics electric pianos

It can happen over the years the original plastic guides of the keyboards break and a "hanging" or dragging effect of the keys is the result. Because there are no original spare parts for Technics anymore, we have been looking for an alternative. After long research and testing, we found a replacement that performs the function of the key guide in a similar way. So we offer a matched product in our online store.

Installation manual for replacement key guide

1. GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Before opening the case, the power plug should be removed in any case!

2. MATERIAL AND FIRST STEPS
For the replacement you need the matching spare part from our store, a cutter, paintbrush and keyboard grease.

2.1 To access the key guides, the housing must be opened by removing the screws. Ideally, the screws should be marked in their installed position or put down in the removed order. This will make it easier to reassemble later.
2.2 If all screws are removed, the cables can be disconnected and the control panel above the keyboard can be removed. Again, it is recommended to mark the cables at their original position with a pen to be able to reassemble them later.
2.3 After that, the keyboard can be moved back by about 1.5 centimeters. If this is not possible, the floppy drive is probably blocking the way and must be removed as well.

3. DISASSEMBLY

3.1 Once the control panel has been removed, you should ideally work your way forward octave by octave. The white keys are removed first. The best way to do this is to press the key down and carefully push the hook upwards at the end. Then it can be pulled forward and removed. This also reveals the spring, which should be put aside. Once the white keys are removed, the black ones can be released in the same way.

3.2 Once an octave is completely removed, the defective key guides can be removed with a screwdriver using a sort of lifting motion.

4. REPLACING THE KEY GUIDES

4.1 After the old parts have been removed, the tubing can be placed on the metal guides and cut just above the metal. When doing this, make sure that the tubing is put on as far as possible.

5. GREASE AND INSERT

5.1 When all guides are inserted, they should be greased with special keyboard grease.
5.2 At the end, replace the black keys and then the white ones with the springs. It is best to check each key for function after installation, as it is possible that a spring is not seated properly and the key will hook.
